Not that I have to reboot my MacBook more often than every third day, but when that reboot happens on the train or in a meeting that darn startup sound is still really annoying.
I finally found StartupSound.prefPane from Arcana Research. This product is free AND removes the noise. Brilliant.
I read this howto on how to get Ubuntu Linux up and running on Apple MacBooks. Since I was reinstalling the macbook anyway and had all the data properly backed up I decided that I might just as well give it a go. So I did.
Following the Howto I quickly had the disks partitioned and the Ubuntu Edgy Live CD running. Only thing not working was getting the correct resolution, the AirPort and automatical mount of my USB stick. But, the installation went smoothly, and I could boot up…

The Endian Firewall Community edition is a quite nice appliance based on IPCop, which are again based on Smoothwall.
The setup is fairly simple, and the reason I use Endian over IPCo

You may also make external backups, which is a great feature.

It’s a common enough scenario that cafe and coffee shop owners, long used to offering free WiFi as a way to get customers in the door, are fighting back.”
This is actually pretty interesting reading. However, personally I use the local WiFi-enabled café as a way to get out of the house a little and enjoy some more professionally made coffe than the one I myself make. I am not really interested in making contact with total strangers IRL either, so bringing my laptop for some IRC chatting is just fine by me. If they stopped offering WiFi I would just stop going there, easy as that.
