Why I left Reddit.
I have been a redditor for 4 years. I even donated money to reddit when they asked politely for it, and got Reddit Gold as thanks. Yesterday, I asked to have my donation refunded and I am now preparing to leave.
Why?
The reddit admins are supporting drug use. Condé Nast, who owns reddit.com, has given orders that they do not want to benefit financially from ads for sites supporting Prop19 as they probably do not want to be thought of as pro-drugs. The reddit admins then proceeds to go public with this and then circumvent the pro-prop19 ad ban by running the same ads for free – “Since we’re not allowed to benefit financially, reddit is now running the ads for free.”
Other things like this artwork displaying the Reddit Alien holding a bag of weed on their blog, and the subreddit /r/trees just makes me very disappointed. I have been using and endorsing a drug lover site for 4 years without knowing it.
Actually, I got that refund for the $15 I donated, so after posting this I’m leaving reddit for good. Not that I really care what happens to Reddit now, but if I were Condé Nast I would try to get return of investment by selling reddit.com. Firing all the employees of reddit and shutting the whole thing down would probably be the right thing to do, but selling it off is also sufficiently making the statement “we do not support drug use”.
Are you serious? It took you four years to figure out Reddit is a pro-weed site? I hope this is fake, you are absolutely pathetic. Digg said they are ready to take you back in.
Either this is a lame troll, or a truly stupid person.
@Alex Alta
I just followed the technology reddits, so I obviosly missed out on the politics. When I finally got wind of them I had to follow my own convictions.
And that you think I am absolutely pathetic is really going to make me cry myself to sleep for a month. Or not.
@Tirau I value your thoughtful input.
Can I ask *why* you hate marijuana so much, exactly?
@Sping Hello Sping, nice to get a visit from you. Thanks for commenting.
I am not sure if *hate* is the right word, it’s more “dislike” or “I think people should stay away from substances that alter their behavior in unpredictable ways” or “I know people that are regular weed smokers and all they care about now is smoking weed”. So I cannot actively support – by being a paying member – a website that officially supports legalization of things that I consider harmful, being why I left reddit.
If people want to fuck up their lives by smoking weed/hasj/crack/tobacco so be it, but I am not going to support it.
Thanks for being polite
What a silly reason to leave a silly site like reddit…
